Why Umiyama

Built for businesses that sell matcha every day

A path between rows of tea bushes in Shizuoka
Between the rows at our partner farm, Shizuoka.
01

Color in the cup

Bright green in a latte, smooth finish, no bitterness.

More

The grades we carry were chosen for how they look and taste in milk, which is where most café matcha ends up. They stay a clear green in a latte and finish smooth, without the bitterness you get from cheaper leaf that was picked late or shaded for too short a time.

02

Milled to order

Our house blend is stone-milled fresh for each order, up to 1,200 kg a month.

More

Our Shizuoka tea house keeps the house blend leaf in reserve and only stone-mills it once your order comes in, so your matcha is ground for you, not taken off a shelf. It also means a custom blend of grades is put together and milled just for you. About 1,200 kg is available every month, 300 kg of each of grades S, A, B and C, so when your volume goes up you stay on the same grade instead of switching suppliers partway through the year.

03

Direct and simple

Ships from Japan to your door. Quoted in US dollars.

More

Your order ships straight from Japan to you, and every quote is written in US dollars, so the price we agree on is the price you pay even when the yen moves between the quote and the invoice.

04

We know the farms

Every new farm is visited in person and its tea tested before we offer it.

More

Building relationships with farms is the core of what we do. Before we sell from a new farm, it is visited in person and its tea is tested for quality, and every lot is tasted before it goes on the list. We are based in Japan, so the fields are always within reach, and most of what we sell comes from people we know by name. That is how we keep quality steady, and how we find products that are not in any catalog.

Walking the farm road between tea fields in Shizuoka

Our story

Tea from the mountains, nori from the family

Umiyama means sea and mountain. The mountain is tea: our matcha comes from partner farms in the hills of Shizuoka, Kagoshima and Kyushu. The sea is nori: my wife's family grows it on the Ariake Sea in Saga.

I'm originally from Florida and run the company from Fukuoka. Our first customers were cafés back home that wanted a reliable source for matcha. Wagyu came later through the same trading partners, and the family's Saga nori will be the next thing we bring over once it is ready.
